Key profit traits driving ram demand at Janmac

Prime lamb producers looking for rams with key profit driving traits bidded with confidence at the annual Janmac sale on Wednesday.

The Goroke, Victoria, stud achieved a total clearance of 195 rams and strong support from return and new clients saw the overall average price for Poll Dorset sires jump by more than $300.

Co-principal Grant Hausler said they were confident there was demand in the lead up to the sale but were still blown away with the result.

Fast growth rams for fast growth lambs results in superb sale for Janmac

Whether it was buying rams to service first-cross ewes, or to breed their own rams, buyers had a big appetite for both Poll Dorsets and White Suffolks at Janmac’s spring sale at Goroke, Vic, last week.

The Hausler family enjoyed a ripping on-property auction with a full clearance of 149 Poll Dorsets rams to $5000, averaging $2170, and a full clearance of 46 White Suffolks to $1800, averaging $1356.

Lofty lamb outlook here for the long term

The stars are all aligning for the Australian lamb industry this year and Janmac co-principal Grant Hausler is confident it is more than just a flash in the pan.

“It is quite clear that the outlook for lamb is overwhelmingly positive and it is driven by good fundamentals – strong overseas demand with people chasing protein and markets everywhere, and a record low ewe base,” he said.
